About Aylmerton Outdoor Education Centre

Aylmerton Outdoor Education Centre provides such excellent residential educational visits that schools return to us year after year after year. The centre is set in an old Victorian school building, although we have built several new elements as well, and we also have a large playing field.

Around the old playground are The School and The Lodge. The School is the larger building with 48 beds in four dormitories, as well as two dining rooms and a multi-purpose classroom. The smaller building is The Lodge which has 33 beds in six rooms. Schools can book one or both buildings, dependent on their needs.

Accommodation is bunk beds, and these are made up with sheets prior to your arrival, so children need only bring a duvet cover and pillowcase. All bedding is provided for adults.  All dormitories are ensuite, so once children are in bed there is no reason to leave the room.

Our Staff

We recognise that one of the most important factors governing the health and safety of our groups is the quality of our staff. We have therefore done all we can to ensure that our staff provide the very highest standards of health and safety.

Throughout their time with us, our instructors are regularly assessed and monitored to ensure that they continue to operate under the highest health and safety conditions.

The result of these policies is that we have an unusually well qualified and experienced workforce which is somewhat more mature than you may have encountered at other Centres.

DBS Checks

It is a statutory requirement that all adults working closely with children are DBS checked. However, we believe that there is the potential for these DBS checks to be less than meaningful and have therefore again exceeded the statutory requirement.

Absolutely every person who is employed by Aylmerton Outdoor Education Centre – instructors, domestic staff and office staff must undergo a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

First Aid Cover

All our instructors are first aid trained (EFAW) and all carry comprehensive first aid kits. Again, we exceed the statutory requirements with our domestic and admin staff also holding a first aid certificate, which means that there is always a first aid trained staff member available during activities, as well as onsite between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm.

Our instructors carry mobile phones and the centre has a telephone for staff use so that emergency services can always be contacted immediately if required.

Health & Safety Policy

We have a comprehensive Health and Safety policy with risk assessments and their controls for all the activities we offer.

Our instructors are all first aid trained and carry first aid kits, throw lines and storm shelters (where relevant),  mobile phones and/or radios for communication.

Our off site activities take place in controlled environments which our staff have been using for many years. Our risk assessments cover all the hazards likely to be encountered in these areas.

Due to their many years experience, our staff know which beaches (and which parts of those beaches) are safest, the timings and heights of the tides, the current and forecasted weather conditions and wind direction and their likely effects on the environment and the group, the location of the nearest toilets (and  ice cream vans), where and when it may be safe to paddle etc.

NEW ADDITION

The Ropes Course

Enjoy the views and build your sense of adventure with our exciting ropes course. Opened in 2023, the ropes course is a real Aylmerton ‘highlight’.

Each element tests your physical and mental resilience – including a wobbly bridge, see-saw, jungle ropes, tunnel and even a skateboard!

The SmartSnap safety system, harnesses and helmets ensure that you are always attached and safe, whilst our fully trained instructors provide instruction and encouragement.

A perfect introduction to life off the ground.
